The leaf probably belonged to a Psalter (Hymnal section) where there are presented hymns proper of the Benedictine order. This specimen bears three hymns with partial music notation: the 4th strophe of the Hymn to Saint Benedict at Lauds, the hymn to be sung at Lauds (May 3rd) for the celebration of the finding of the True Cross, and the Hymn to Saint John the Baptist (June 24th) at Matins. SCRIPT: Italian gothic liturgical book hand. DECORATION: recto. first column: historiated gothic capital O in light mauve, embellished with foliated elements in green and blue and framed in burnished gold ground. Inside the letter is depicted a young person dressed in green, with curly hair and lowered eyelids, in a pose of adoration, embracing the Holy Cross. Seen in the distance is a background of green hills under a blue sky. Recto. second column: historiated gothic capital 'T' in light mauve and green, embellished with foliated elements in blue and framed in burnished gold ground. The letter is nearly filled by the haloed figure of Saint John the Baptist with his usual attributes: beard and camel's hair garment with leather belt. He holds a book, probably the Gospel, on which a lamb, representing the Christ, rests. PLACE OF CREATION: [France]

Ms. text includes: Canticles of Freedom, of Ezekiel and of AnnaLAYOUT: 1 column, full page, frame ruled in lead (110mm. x 165mm). Leroy 20D1, written in 23 lines above top line. The leaf bears the initial part of the Canticles section common in Psalters. On the recto Isaiah, 12:2-6, Isaiah 38:10-12, on the verso, Isaiah 38:14-18, 20, I Samuel 2:1. While copying, the scribe skips part of text in two points and the missing parts are added at the bottom of the leaf recto and at the top of the leaf verso by two different hands. SCRIPT: Gothic textualis. Very few abbreviations, of typical 14th century form, diacritical sign on the 'I's next to the letter 'U', to avoid confusion in reading. Few text mistakes. On the lower margin of the leaf recto, a later and quite cursive hand, adds the missing verse Isaiah 38:13 in a light brown ink, while a second hand adds the missing Isaiah 38:19 on the upper margin of the leaf verso. This hand writes in a small Gothic textualis libraria and is probably the work of a corrector who operates immediately after the completion of the book. DECORATION: verso: primary initial 'E' (of 'Exultavit', beginning of Anna's canticle), 4-line, in gold, on blue and red ground. Tail extensions bar border, colored in blue, gold and red, depart from the letter for the length of the outer and lower margins. Recto: primary initial 'E' (of 'Ego', beginning of Ezekiel's canticle), 4-line, in gold, on blue and red ground, without departing tails. Secondary initials, 1-line, in gold, at the beginning of every verse. Line-fillers alternating red and blue. PLACE OF CREATION: [The Netherlands]
